Your Own Apple, Samsung or Pixel Watch vs a Dedicated Safety Watch

If a loved one already owns a smartwatch, do they need a separate safety watch? An honest look at when your own watch is enough and when a dedicated 4G watch is the better fit.
If your loved one already has an Apple Watch, a Samsung Galaxy Watch or a Google Pixel Watch sitting in a drawer, it is a fair question: do they really need a separate safety watch at all? The honest answer is, it depends entirely on the person, and it is worth thinking it through before you spend anything.
What your own smartwatch can already do
Modern smartwatches are genuinely capable. Apple, Samsung and Pixel watches include automatic fall detection, can place an emergency call, and can share location. For a loved one who already wears one, the watch's own fall detection, emergency contacts and location sharing can be a real safety tool without buying new hardware.
That path suits one kind of person well: a fairly independent loved one who is comfortable with technology, happy to charge a watch every day, and able to tap through a couple of prompts. If that is your loved one, using the watch they already have, with its own fall detection, emergency contacts and location sharing, can be all they need. One honest caveat: most smartwatches only stay connected with their phone close by, so that route suits someone who always carries theirs.
Where a dedicated watch wins
For a lot of older loved ones, though, a smartwatch is the wrong tool, and not because of anything they lack. It is a question of fit.
- They cannot manage a phone or a fiddly smartwatch. A dedicated 4G safety watch works straight out of the box, with its own SIM. Nothing to pair, no phone to carry, no menus to learn.

- You want the family called directly. A dedicated watch can call the family contacts in turn with two-way voice, rather than routing through a phone or a paid call centre.
- Coverage matters. A built-in roaming SIM can use more than one Irish network, so it does not depend on a phone's signal.
The honest way to choose

- Confident, independent, already wears a smartwatch daily, close family nearby: their own watch's fall detection, emergency contacts and location sharing can be enough.
- Not comfortable with technology, forgets to charge things, living with dementia, or you want the simplest possible experience: a dedicated watch is the safer, calmer choice.

Can an Apple Watch be used as a fall alarm for an older loved one?+
Yes, recent models can help. Apple Watch (Series 4 or later, SE and Ultra), Samsung Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch include fall detection: Apple calls the emergency services and messages emergency contacts, Pixel calls the emergency services, and Samsung messages an SOS contact. Most need the phone nearby unless it is a cellular or LTE model with its own plan. It works best for a fairly independent loved one who is comfortable charging and using a smartwatch, and who carries their phone. We do not make an app for those watches, we make a dedicated watch.
Is a dedicated safety watch better than a smartwatch for the elderly?+
For a loved one who cannot manage a phone or a fussy smartwatch, or who is living with dementia, a dedicated 4G watch that works out of the box, with its own SIM, is usually the better fit. For a confident smartwatch user, the watch's own fall detection, emergency contacts and location sharing can be enough.
Do I need a separate SIM or phone for a safety watch?+
A dedicated 4G safety watch has its own roaming SIM built in, so there is nothing for the wearer to set up and no phone to carry. A smartwatch usually leans on a paired phone or its own cellular plan.
