1. A pendant with fall detection

2. A wristband with fall detection

The same idea on the wrist. People who refuse a pendant will often wear a band, and a button on the wrist can be reached from the floor. It is still a home device, tied to its base unit.

3. A mobile pendant with its own SIM

A pendant with a SIM card and GPS inside, so it works wherever there is mobile signal and can share a location. It suits someone who is out a lot and prefers something around the neck or clipped to a belt. It needs charging every few days.

4. A 4G fall detection watch

A watch with its own SIM, an SOS button, GPS, two-way voice and fall detection. It works at home and away, it looks like an ordinary watch, and many models alert the family directly rather than only a call centre. The trade-off is a charging routine every day or two. Modern smartwatches from the big phone makers include a fall feature that can call the emergency services and text chosen contacts. For a confident smartphone user that can be a real option. 6. Sensors in the home

Sensors fitted in rooms can notice a fall, or a long stillness, with nothing worn at all. They suit someone who will not wear any device. They only cover the rooms they are fitted in, and nothing beyond the front door.

What every fall detection device has in common

• None of them catches every fall. A slow slide from a chair or sinking down a wall may never produce the sharp motion the sensor is listening for. That is why a button still matters.
